What is the skin barrier?

What is the skin barrier and why is it important?

As its name suggests, your skin barrier is your first line of defence from environmental stressors. It’s also the secret to glowing skin. As the outermost layer of your epidermis, it keeps the bad stuff – pollution, irritants – out, and locks in the good stuff like moisture. When it’s compromised though, your skin will show it. Here’s how to improve skin with a happy, healthy barrier…

What affects the skin barrier?

Our skin is a bit like Goldilocks when it comes to the weather – if it’s too hot or too cold, it doesn’t like it. During the winter months, colder temperatures and central heating can dry it out, preventing your moisture barrier from staying hydrated and functioning properly. Hot, humid climates can also encourage you to sweat and oily skin to produce excess oil that clogs your pores and leads to congestion and inflammation. Don’t forget to layer on the SPF too as the sun’s rays can disrupt your skin barrier and make it more susceptible to sun damage.

Turning up the shower as well as the thermostat can also strip the skin of its natural oils and weaken the moisture barrier. Harsh cleansers can encourage skin stripping too. The most common skincare mistake people make is to over-exfoliate though – this can actually lead to more breakouts rather than less, as well as inflammation and irritated skin.

How to repair a skin barrier

Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser that removes dirt, oil and impurities from your skin. The Decléor Rose Damascena Soothing Micellar Water is enriched with Rose Essential Oil. It soothes skin and helps restore its natural balance. Its tiny micelles are also effective at removing makeup and dirt.

To avoid weakening an already damaged skin barrier, look for nourishing day creams and night creams that will replenish and lock in moisture. Neroli Bigarade Essential Oil is an ingredient in this hydrating Decléor face cream. It is formulated with 98% natural-origin ingredients to help the skin feel fresh, plump and look smooth. As your skin can focus on reversing the damage caused during the day while you sleep, hydrating night creams and balms are a good way to plump your skin with moisture. Our Neroli Bigarade Night Balm hydrates and soothes your skin and focuses on skin barrier repair when it is at its most receptive, so all you need to do is sleep.

Finally, the most important skincare step, don’t forget your SPF. Prevention is key when it comes to your skin barrier. Keep it happy and healthy with a daily layer of high broad-spectrum protection.
